Here are the 50 or so movies that I consider the all time best – just for some insight into my taste.
Casablanca, The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II, The Rules of the Game, 8 1/2, The Seven Up Series, Blue/White/Red,
All About Eve, Some Like It Hot, Mon Oncle, Citizen Kane, Chinatown,
Strangers on a Train, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, Boyhood, Double Indemnity,
Sullivan’s Travels, High Noon, The Manchurian Candidate, The Graduate, The Producers, Anatomy of a Murder, Blow-Up, Five Easy Pieces, Paris Texas,
The Conversation, Taxi Driver, Annie Hall, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, The Right Stuff, Pulp Fiction, It’s a Wonderful Life, Secrets and Lies, Do the Right Thing,
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi, Laura, Jaws, Arsenic and Old Lace, All the President’s Men, American Graffiti, The Maltese Falcon, The Third Man, All That Jazz, Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
I note that only eight of these films were made after the 1970s. When I look back on today’s films, I’ll be interested to see which ones hold up so I can add them to this list (Winter’s Bone? Sideways? Ex Machina? Roma?).
